With puppy training, it does not really matter where you start the training, it is just very important to remember to train very regularly and let your puppy tell you if he or she is ready to go to the next step, because when the puppy is ready to learn the next trick, then it is time to move on.

With every dog there are 6 commands that they should know, come, sit, heel, stay, stand, and lie down.  These commands are the most basic and every dog should be able to complete them in order for the dog to receive more training.

Each session of training should only last up to 5 minutes, as your puppy’s attention span can only last that long. Reward your puppy after each executed trick, as he or she will then realize that what he or she is doing is right, and they will perform the trick easier when prompted to. It is also very important to end every session with an executed trick as an unsuccessful training session will be harmful to the process.

Do not try teach your dog anything after he or she has eaten, as the puppy will just want to relax and digest their food and restore energy.

Treats are a very good way to motivate your puppy into concentrating on what you are teaching them, but be wise in which treats you reward them with. Dog biscuits will take too long to chew and therefore will destroy the flow of the training session. So rather use something that will take a short period to chew on and that your puppy will like.

Treats are not the only way to reward your puppy, you can also use physical contact, as in patting your dog, or you can verbally praise them, by saying a simple “good boy” or something to that effect. Although be careful not to over compensate the puppy after each executed trick or the puppy will lose interest and not want to train.

When it comes to verbal phrases when teaching the puppy, remember that you should only use one word when telling the puppy what to do as the puppy cannot understand full sentences but can associate a word with an action and will combine the 2 in future. An easy way to test this is talk to your dog, read a newspaper article, then randomly call out his or her name and watch the puppy’s attention being drawn to you immediately.

Lastly, do not nag your dog, as it will get very confused with your frustration and will just complicate training. Keep your frustration levels low, talk nicely to your puppy, and remember, training is fun, and should be enjoyable for your puppy too.
